  • Steam’s annual winter sale is here — these are the best games to get

    If you’re lucky enough to have a bit of time off around the holidays, we have great news: Steam’s annual winter sale kicked off today, and will run through Monday, January 5th at 1PM ET. Now’s a great time to stock up on some of the best games of 2025 at a solid discount, or add some classics to your backlog if you’ve got a hole in your library. Thousands of games are on sale, but we’ve picked out some highlights to help you get started. 

    We were surprised to see Hollow Knight: Silksong for $15.99 ($4 off) given its modest price and how recently it came out. You can also pick up Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for $39.99 ($10 off), Silent Hill F for $41.99 ($28 off), and Assassin’s Creed Shadows for $34.99 ($35 off). These games are all on sale just a few months after their release. 

    Some of the most notable remakes and remasters of 2025 have also been discounted. You can snag Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles for $39.99 ($10 off), Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter for $44.99 ($15 off), Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 for $29.99 ($20 off), Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake for $35.99 ($24 off), and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater for $41.99 ($28 off). These titles are worth trying even if you’re familiar with the originals. 

    Steam’s sales are an opportune opportunity to pick up older titles that have stood the test of time, some of which you can get for under a couple of bucks. Too many great games fall into that category, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t call your chance to grab Stardew Valley for $8.99 ($6 off), The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition for $9.99 ($30 off), Slay the Spire for $2.49 ($22.50 off), Resident Evil 4 for $15.99 ($24 off), Castle Crashers for $1.49 ($13.50 off), Bastion for $2.99 ($12 off), and To the Moon for $1.99 ($8 off). 

    You can go even further back in the history of gaming and pick up collections of 8- and 16-bit games, including the chance to pick up Mega Man X Legacy Collection for $7.99 ($12 off), Castlevania Anniversary Collection for $7.99 ($12 off), and Contra Anniversary Collection for $7.99 ($12 off). There’s a little something for everybody in the sale, and we encourage you to mix and match contemporary and classic games to avoid getting bored.

    Hollow Knight: Silksong

    Where to Buy:

    Hollow Knight: Silksong is a tough-as-nails Metroidvania whose boss battles and platforming sequences reward your tenacity as you slowly get better. As Hornet, you’ll cautiously ascend to the top of the world, using weapons and traps to take down over 200 enemies and more than 40 bosses. Be mindful that letting your guard down can be lethal.     Silent Hill F

    Where to Buy:

    Silent Hill F is an exceptional survival horror game set in 1960s Japan. Protagonist Hinako Shimizu is a high school student who has to defeat actual monsters with whatever weapons she can find while also wrestling with inner turmoil caused by familial trauma. Her personal growth, a great script, and terrific score may compel you to replay the game to see all five of its possible endings. Read our review.

    Resident Evil 4

    Where to Buy:

    If you prefer a healthy dose of action in your horror games, the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 is an excellent choice. Federal agent Leon Kennedy is sent to retrieve the president’s daughter from a remote Spanish village, and ends up uncovering a murderous cult and plenty of gnarly monsters. The original game’s story has been fleshed out, and its script has been reworked without losing all of its campiness. Read our review.

    Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

    Where to Buy:

    Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG with an engaging battle system that rewards you for mastering its dodge and parry system. Pulling off the right parry, which takes time to learn, and you can turn the tide of a battle. The game has an atmospheric soundtrack along with a story our reviewer found heart-wrenching, stirring, and humorous. It won Game of the Year at the 2025 Game Awards, too. Read our review. 

    Assassin’s Creed Shadows

    Where to Buy:

    Assassin’s Creed Shadows has two big strengths: Its setting (medieval Japan) and its two lead characters, Naoe and Yasuke. Each character has a unique gameplay style, which gives you a couple of ways to approach each situation stealthily or by using brute force. Shadows’ open world is huge, and the little activities we found on our way to the big quests, and codex entries offering exhaustive details about the game’s setting made it fun to traverse.     • The Petcube Fountain is on sale for $54.99 ($25 off) at Amazon, which is its best price to date. The 57-ounce fountain uses a four-layer filtration system to help remove bacteria and other impurities from your pet’s water, and it can send alerts via the companion app when it’s time to swap in a new filter. It’s also rechargeable and designed to run only when your pet is nearby, helping to save power.

    Amazon Echo Spot

    Amazon’s Echo Spot smart speaker-meets-alarm clock has a 2.83-inch squared-off display for showing the time, weather, album art, and other bits of info you may want at your bedside.     • Other Kindle models are down to some of their best prices too, including the ad-supported versions of the Kindle (Amazon, Best Buy, and Target) and Kindle Colorsoft (Amazon, Best Buy). The last-gen Kindle Scribe with 32GB of storage and ads is receiving the biggest discount, though, matching its best price to date starting at $279.99 ($140 off) at Amazon and Best Buy. The monochromatic e-reader comes with a stylus so you can jot notes directly in Kindle books or in the built-in notebook.     The PlayStation Portal is a handheld that allows you to stream games from your PS5 over the same network, or via the cloud for certain titles if you have a PS Premium Plus subscription.     • The 40mm Apple Watch SE 3 with GPS is down to its all-time low price of $199 ($50 off) at Amazon and Walmart. Despite being Apple’s entry-level smartwatch, it’s one of the best wearables we tested this year, offering impressive upgrades like an always-on display and significantly improved durability. You don’t get EKGs a blood oxygen sensor, and hypertension detection, but you do get sleep apnea notifications and Apple’s powerful S10 chip, which enables on-device Siri requests along with double-tap and wrist-flick gestures.     The Fitbit Charge 6 features a haptic side button, an improved heart rate algorithm, turn-by-turn navigation with Google Maps, and the ability to broadcast your heart rate on certain Bluetooth gym equipment.

The soundbar supports Dolby Atmos through its virtual height channels as well as HDMI eARC.     • Hisense’s 55-inch U8QG is on sale for $727.99 ($772 off) at Amazon and Best Buy, while the 65-inch is down to an all-time low of $949.99 ($548 off) at the same retailers (Amazon / Best Buy). The mini-LED TV offers gamer-friendly features like snappy 165Hz refresh rate, three HDMI 2.1 ports, and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to prevent screen tearing. It’s also great for watching TV shows and movies, with full-array local dimming to reduce blooming, as well as support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos in content that supports them. Plus, it runs on Google’s easy-to-use TV platform — granting quick, easy access to all the major streaming apps — and offers an impressive maximum screen brightness of 5,000 nits.

Those are among the best prices we’ve seen on the magnetic charger, which supports 15W MagSafe and Qi2 charging. When paired with a 30W USB-C power adapter, it can also deliver up to 25W to compatible iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models, as well as the iPhone Air.
    • MasterClass is offering 50 percent discount on its annual subscription, with plans starting at $50. The service provides access to virtual lessons covering a wide range of subjects — from science and tech to cooking, sports, business, art, film, music, and more — all taught by experts and well-known creators, including David Lynch, Stephen Curry, Ringo Starr, Kevin Hart, and hundreds more.

  • The latest iPad Air is $400 for the first time and arrives by Christmas

    If you have $400 and want an iPad, your options are usually kind of limited to either just the base iPad, or better yet, the latest iPad Mini — if it happens to be on sale when you’re shopping (it is now, but that’s not always the case). But right now, you should consider getting the 128GB version of Apple’s 11-inch iPad Air with the capable M3 processor. At Target, multiple colors of this model are $399.99, beating the previous low of $449.99 we’ve seen during large-scale deal events. Currently, no other retailer is matching this price. This sale ends Saturday night.

    11-inch iPad Air M3

    The new 11-inch iPad Air comes with Apple’s M3 chip and GPU upgrades. It’s available in dark gray, blue, purple, and a “starlight” cream shade. Read our review.

    Where to Buy:

    $400 is a sweet price for this model, as it debuted in early 2025 for $600. In terms of how it stacks up to other iPad models, Verge editor-at-large David Pierce said in his impressions that the M3 Air is “exactly what you think it is. Which is fine.” I know, that sounds like a back-handed compliment, but it’s been a while since iPads peaked in terms of utility, design, and fast performance. This one carries the torch in Apple’s tablet dominance, and its M3 processor means it’ll be a fantastic tablet for longer than any other iPad at the $400 price point. Read our in-depth impressions.

    Other Verge-approved deals

    • Sony’s phenomenal Astro Bot is down to $39.99 for the holidays. The PS5-exclusive title belongs in any gamer’s catalog, with platforming gameplay that should feel familiar to anyone who’s ever played a 3D Super Mario game. It riffs on the formula is some highly original ways and takes full advantage of the delicate rumble motors in the DualSense controller. You can snag this title on disc at Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart for $39.99 (usually $59.99). Every new PS5 comes with Astro’s Playroom preinstalled, which is a good, yet small taste of what you get with Astro Bot. Read our review.
    • Another great discount is happening on a new Apple product. The AirPods Pro 3 are back down to $199.99 at Amazon, which is a $50 discount off their original price. This model came out recently, and iPhone owners won’t find a better set of wireless active noise-canceling earbuds at this price. Compared to the AirPods Pro 2, these have improved sound and more effective noise cancellation. They also include XXS as an eartip size option, totaling five sizes in the box. Read our review.
    • Costco members can score a $150 off deal on SimpliSafe’s 13-piece security system. Normally $349.99, it’s $199.99 for members. The set includes a base station, a key pad, a motion sensor, eight entry sensors to equip on window and door frames, plus two of SimpliSafe’s Outdoor Camera Series 2 cams. The outdoor cameras boast 1080p capture with a 140-degree field of view and colorized night vision. As for the motion sensor’s sensitivity, it can detect movement within 35 feet, with a 90-degree field of view. This set comes with a three-month trial of SimpliSafe’s professional monitoring, though its suite of monthly plans range from around $20 and up.
